Dear ARTivists and STEPS enthusiasts,
Our Rss feed and facebook updates are now up and running --
it was one of our New Year’s resolutions!
Here is an update on some of our work. Our community consultation was very successful. We
interviewed over 150 ARTivists across Canada, from every province and
territory, and have transcribed and catalogued all of these interviews for
upcoming projects. The first
project we are undertaking is the STEPS ARTivism Manualfesto, a book project that highlights Canadian ARTivists
and their work. The Manualfesto
will be a collection of ARTivist profiles, along with a code of conduct, list
of resources, and critical material on artistic practices, art and public
space, activism, policy, and the challenges of working as an ARTivist. The publication will include
multi-media (video and sound), and will be the first publication of its kind in
Canada.
Stay posted for more updates, event announcements and
ARTivist profiles…

Dear STEPS Enthusiasts, Here is our first ARTivist Profile. We will be featuring a couple of ARTivists per month from across Canada, highlighting their work past, present and future. STEPS will soon have a database archiving all our ARTivists, so that you can search for people in your area, or working in a particular artistic medium. Vera Guo of Darcy's Box Vera conceived of Darcy’s Box, an art installation for the city of Cambridge’s Unsilent Night, as part of her Master’s project in the department of Architecture. The project has two aims: first, to challenge the ways in which people perceive building facades, to see them as potential canvasses for sustainable art in the form of light-projections, and, second, to create community spirit in the interactions and engagements with light-installations in public spaces. Where many urban city centres employ building facades as space for advertisements, Vera sees this as problematic and contributing to visual noise pollution, sensory overload and ultimately apathy. She thus advocates for collaboration between architects, artists and corporations to scale down gargantuan ads, and to employ methods that are environmentally sustainable and innovative to increase community spirit and enjoyment of public space. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj5g-hGVs8k |

The STEPS Initiative is only as strong as its foundation,
which is built on the voluntary work of enthusiastic and creative
individuals like you. With grassroots projects underway in communities
from coast to coast, our team needs your
help connecting with what's happening in your home town.
STEPS is developing a series of resources in service of
our mission to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration between
individuals and grassroots collectives using art to engage citizens in
transforming their local environments. Currently, we are conducting interviews with ARTivists, activists, and community groups and individuals supporting this type of work to collect information on the successes, challenges and lessons learned on grassroots Public Space ARTivism across Canada. Your involvement as a Research Assistant, or an Outreach & Resource Dissemination Coordinator will aid in sharing the stories of community artists and activists nationwide, as well as the creation of an international network of Public Space ARTivists and enthusiasts.
We are also
looking for Contributing Editors, Media Representatives, Website/ Database Development Assistants and Graphic Designers to help develop our virtual commons, Manualfesto, documentary and to contribute to content found on this website.
To find out more about these volunteer opportunities, visit the Intern or Volunteer page or see the descriptions attached.
