STEPS believes that art in public spaces engages citizens to transform their local environment and build community. We seek to promote ‘public space ARTivism’ by researching undocumented grassroots initiatives, producing practical tools for using art to enliven community spaces and facilitating knowledge exchange among the environmental, social and arts sectors.

Five Foundations of Public Space ARTivism

Public Space
STEPS believes that public space is crucial for community development and engagement. In fact, it provides the very venue to discuss issues affecting the communities in which we live, work, and play.

Art
Art is unique in its ability to connect diverse individuals and communities, and to engage them in common dialogue. Art is not limited to the creations of professional or trained “artists.” Anyone with a point of view can express himself/herself creatively.

Activism /Social Justice
Activism brings about social change through the questioning of current practices and social norms. By actively engaging with communities in public spaces, STEPS believes we can reconceptualise our relationship with our environment and each other.

Grassroots
Members of particular communities are experts in the strengths, needs, and challenges of their unique environments. STEPS is interested in initiatives stemming from within communities themselves.

Community Engagement
An initiative that aims to create social change must engage the wider community. STEPS believes that a project must not exist in isolation, but must invite participation from the individuals and groups living, working, or playing in the community itself.
