Since 2009, the Sustainable Thinking and Expression on Public Space (STEPS) Initiative has been promoting the use of art to connect people with places (especially public spaces). We promote dialogue and collaboration between individuals and collectives who use art to enliven the relationship between people and their local environments (Public Space ARTivism).

The STEPS Team

The STEPS Initiative is built on the voluntary work of enthusiastic and creative citizens like you. With grassroots projects underway in communities from coast to coast, our team includes staff members and nearly seventy volunteer interns from across Canada.

Our team is comprised of individuals from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, each bringing his/her passion for the transformative power of art in community spaces. The STEPS’ team is trained in urban planning, architecture, environmental studies, community development, urban design, sociology, arts-enabled programming, political science, geography, youth empowerment, communications, visual arts, social policy,
cultural studies, social justice, community health, conflict resolution,
and community-based research.
